I suck at theory. I don't know enough for my rating, I only know a 30-move semi-slav line, and the e3 stuff. Marshall: Not enough, must go deeper than 20 moves. spanish, not enough as white, english, just learned it. sveshnikov, not enough. and can someone teach me the new caro meta as white in the c5 line with Nf3 cxd4 Qxd4 Nc6 Qf4 ? Need to know that too, I need waaayyy more theory, IM/GM level theory, that'll help me improve, any theoreticians that can teach me ?

As a GM once said: "Until you reach FM 2300, opening study should be 10% of your study time.

I can guarantee you that openings are not deciding your games. Blunders and missed tactics are.

Your last Daily game: https://www.chess.com/game/daily/859419746?move=0

You lost in 17 moves and failed to see an obvious tactic. Also you moved way to fast for daily chess.

After looking at many of your games. All of them were decided by blunders and missed tactics. But if studying openings brings you joy then keep studying them. But don't expect to improve as long as youre missing the obvious.

Im never going to improve im that bad so why not memorize all the theory i can before i quit

Avatar of Toldsted

Don't quit, but focus on having fun and improving your chess. As said above: Opening theory is not very important. And memorizing theory is not important at all before you are a way better chess player.

James, I already told you many times and I see others tell you the same thing... Right now, opening theory won't help you! If you wanna study something then study endgames. Do tactics, learn from your games.

Maybe it is just me but I learn much more from actual playing than studying. You look at your games, and after seeing what you did wrong, try to not repeat it (this takes a lot of practice) and just simply learn from your mistakes. Also, you need a more positive mindset.

You're welcome.

With that sort of mindset I’m afraid you’ll never be very good

If you want to memorize something, memorize tactics and model mating patterns.

That should actually raise your playing strength.

Some years ago we had a kid that moved to the US. He was 10 and was already closing in on 1800 USCF. The local masters were all saying that by the time he reaches 15 he will be a Master.

So what happened? Like many young people he fell in love with openings. Everything with him was "Opening theory". "I know the...15 moves deep." When he lost a game it was always the same two excuses. "I forgot my theory..." or "I mixed up my theory..." When in reality he had blundered material or missed a tactic.

He peaked at 1800 and never improved beyond that.

Heh unskilled kids, just like me

Avatar of Cognitoetmetaphysica

I’m 15 and i have zero clue how to play chess

Avatar of Cognitoetmetaphysica

I was actually good when I had no knowledge and was 9 years old

Avatar of Cognitoetmetaphysica

So I’m no different than this kid, unskilled, which means I’m terrible. Yay

Now you're just seeking attention.

Avatar of Cognitoetmetaphysica

No I’m reflecting on how I’ve played throughout my life and I’m no different than this kid

Openings make no difference bruh

Cuz if it was all about the opening, how can Magnus play 1. a4 2. Ra3 and still win? The opening is horrible.

He was a good kid. His parents were really nice. He got frustrated because he wasn't improving, and he refused to listen to anyone that tried to tell him to not concentrate on openings so much. His dad was paying a GM to give him lessons, and the kid wouldn't even listen to his GM coach.

I hope they are doing OK.

Ok yeah im no different than him, am i doomed?

It will come down to choices. YOU have the choice to concentrate on openings. And you have the choice to concentrate on doing what will make you a better player.

Like I said before. Whatever you do have fun doing it. Where it becomes ridiculous is when you only concentrate on openings and post things like "How come Im not improving?"

You're "doomed" if YOU choose to be.
