Studying Chess Openings and Ideas

Depends on the book, and you do NOT want to memorize. You want to UNDERSTAND the opening you are studying. I spend about 20 percent of the time studying openings. Otherwise, I spend the rest of the time studying books on strategy, endgames, and game collections (i.e. Korchnoi, Short, Bhat, or some tournament).

"if I want to learn an opening?" ++ There is no need to.
"learn and memorize opening lines?" ++ 'Chess must not be memorized' - Lasker
'Memorization of variations could be even worse
than playing in a tournament without looking in the books at all.' - Botvinnik
'just forget about the openings and spend all that time on the endings' - Capablanca
