Surprise transposition from the scandinavian

Sort:

I really like to play the scandinavian, but i really dislike playing AGAINST the scandinavian. So ilooked at possible transpositions, and found the 2d4 transposition into the blackmar gambit, and the 2f4 transposition into the williams gambit.
Watermelon-Man

Addition: I really like the idea of the williams gambit. i don't know why. After 2... e6 it kind of looks a bit like tne labourdonnais variation in the french. So what do you think about this line?

  • U can like it but objectively the Williams gambit is bad for white.
  • There is also quite funny Advance variation 1. e4 d5 2. e5 grin.png

2.e5 is bad.  The problem with the French is the bad bishop is behind the pawn chain.  The problem with the Caro-Kann is that Black spends 2 moves to break White's center with the c-pawn.

With 2.e5 against the Scandinavian, Black gets the best of both worlds, basically playing a tempo up in the Caro-Kann.

White's only decent moves against the Scandinavian are 2.exd5 and 2.Nc3.

As for the author of the original post, here's what I'd suggest:

2.exd5 and now:

A) If 2...Nf6, do not go into what Black wants with 3.c4, surrendering positional trumps to hold on to the extra pawn.  Play 3.d4!  Now if 3...Nxd5, then 4.c4 and White gets, in essence, a better version of Alekhine's Defense, just like how Black gets an improved Caro-Kann after 2.e5?!.  If instead, Black plays 3...Bg4, then again, don't give Black the wild game he wants with 4.f3, instead play 4.Nf3 or 4.Be2.  Again, White's positional trumps will outweigh anything Black has.

B) If 2...Qxd5, there is a more modern idea of 3.Nf3, leaving the c-pawn unblocked rather than chasing the Queen with 3.Nc3 but making it harder to develop your other pieces smoothly.

After 1.e4 d5 2.f4?, why would Black play 2...e6?  Take the pawn!  2...dxe4!  Advantage Black already!

Since when has the assessment of a chess opening been WHOLEY objective?

I guess that the question is rhetorical. grin.png

Indeed.

this is probably why white is have trouble proving an advantage against the Scandinavian defense, and understandably so. Another problem of playing e4 is the Sicilian, and is enough to make d4 popular then d4. I generally prefer the latter as it is usually good to play against the Indians.

This seems like a biased post. The Scandinavian is fine, but the problem is that Black is walking a rather narrow path. 3... Qa5 is in deep trouble as it looks like only the ... c6 and ... Bf5 lines are holding up for Black, and even there White is doing well. 3... Qd6 is better, but AFAIK White gets an easy edge by just throwing in g3 and Bf4.

This variation is bad for White:
