The Counter -Attack Defenses

The counter -attack defences are based on a quite different concept from the sound defenses. In the latter, Black tries to stifle White's threats; in the former, Black ignores his opponent's activities reckoning that his counter play will distract him from completing his plans. After 1.e4 Black has two counter -attack defenses: The. Sicilian Defence ...... c5. and Alekhine's Defense ...Nf6.
The Sicilian Defence: White normally continues on his second move with 2 Nf3 preparing 3 d4 which attacks the c5 Pawn and forces black to surrender the center by 3....c×d4.
Alekhine's Defence. 1.e4 Nf6
This defence is not so much a counter -attack as a provocation. White can always avoid Alekhine's by plating 2. Nc3 when black has nothing better than 2.... e5 transposing into the Vienna.
