smith-mora gambit accepted 1. e4 c5 2. d4 cxd4 3. c3 dxc3 4. Nxc3
puts white in a development lead

Why so quick to dismiss 1. f4? And how about 1. c4? 1. Nf3?? d4 isn't the only other option, you know!
What about 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. c3 ?
I have had good success with the Delayed Alapin, but I want to learn how to use it against 2...d6, which I have not had quite as much success with.
I used to play the delayed Alapin. It is quite interesting, but I do not recommend it. You can't use it against everything

and 1 b4
I played 1 f4 a few years ago. It doesn't pressurise black enough. In a simultaneous I remember an IM playing something like d5, Bg4, Nc6 and forcing through e5 against me. Of course he won
1c4/1Nf3 allows c5 and black has a "deferred Sicilian" (Hedgehog)
After 1d4 , benoni types defences allow white the possibility of d5 getting a spatial edge.
As a Sicilian player myself, I pretty much expect the Morra and c3 all the time and can therefore prepare. The Morra statistically does quite badly.
I heard 1.b4 is the 10th most often played opening. Don't play it unless you are very familiar with Sokolsky's own games. If you are not, you may be passing up some wins for White.

2 out of those three will most likely transpose after 1) c5 like most of the die hard sicilian players do...then i feel like you have to go into slightly more inferior positions for white to avoid the sicilian game
The Modern Benoni vs 1.d4 reminds me of the Closed Ruy Lopez where Black has 4 pawns vs 3 pawns on the queenside.
Play the Rossilimo Attack, the Richter-Rauser and the Yugoslav Attack for White. That should cover everything.
I have sometimes played the Leningrad Dutch Reversed against the Sicilian (for those Gran Prix players). I have even (as White) found it transposed from a Bird's Opening to a Sicilian position (in a tournament).
There is nothing wrong with 1.f4 in my opinion. There are better openings. It depends on who you are playing.
For Hedgehog knowledge, seek out Lord Gonnosuke.
For those familiar with my chess openings knowledge, I sought the Universal Opening - on a stone tablet given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai. After 40 years in the desert I have moved on .... to the Max Euwe Middle Game Strategies and the Universal Won Ending in the games of the prophets Jose R. Capablanca and Anatoly Karpov.
Oh ye seekers of true, eat my dust. Go ye then and seek the Universal Winning Chess Opening in the rain forests of the Orinoko, and beneath the Tree of Life in the Ring of Fire. Then push a peanut up Pike's Peak with your nose, and take a train. If that doesn't do it, I don't know what will.
Try listening to KillaBeez here. He has it all pretty well sorted out. At least he didn't get lost in the desert.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said about meeting the Sicilian Defense, "We have nothing to fear, but Fear itself".
Sigbert Tarrasch said, "If you can't play against the Sicilian, give up chess."
Joey asked, "Would you screw with the Godfather?"
Would you mug the Godfather's grandmother, and steal her purse, in his neighborhood? If you do you will get the Sicilian Revenge. The Sicilians like to see 1.e4. what Joey knew is that "most people are schnooks"(his words). They are not "stand up guys", because they don't have the guts. That's most people.
William Shakespeare said it best. "The Sicilian Defense is much ado about nothing". It ain't about nothing.
My lord, your brother John is ta'en in flight,
And brought with armed men back to Messina.
Think not on him till to-morrow:
I'll devise thee brave punishments for him.
Strike up, pipers.
When bored with sicilian, I play 1. e4 c5 2. c4
with transposition into V pawn structure of the Russian opening.
He might have said something "like chess is a testy and cholaric game and offendeth him the that loseth the mate"- OK I think it was James I
There is no good way to counter the Sicillian Defense provided the player using it knows his onions. We believe that after 1.e4-c5 White should resign hehe.JOHO of course comment not meant to instigate a troll.
However after 1.D4 as suggested transposing it to the Sicillian scenario would be quite too taxing if not improbable, so let us assume the first move would be 1.E4 which many say is the "strongest" first move.
Always fear the Sicillian for it has a Dragon up it's sleeve hehe.Sure as day White will be finding ways and means to slay it as he slowly loses the game.
