thoughts about Reti?
Well, I think the Reti (opening) is a safe way to start a game. You are kind of waiting, which can sometimes be bad / tricky (in my expierience / opinion) if your opponent goes for the modern defense or the Ruy Lopez, but since its passive and kind of a "waiting and preparing"-opening I prefer it if I am black
Problem with the Reti is you can't force it and must know a LOT of pawn structures. You may get the Reti (1.Nf3 d5 2.c4), which there you must know Reverse Benoni Structures (2...d4), accepting (2...dxc4) and many Declined lines (2...c6, 2...e6).
However, Black can also avoid the Reti by not playing 1...d5. After 1...c5, your choice is Symmetrical English (2.c4 or c4 any point later), Sicilian (2.e4), or KIA (2...g3 and later playing for e4). After 1...f5, you are in Dutch Territory. After 1...Nf6, the non committal move, Black may or may not play ...d5. I never recommend the English and Reti repertoire to anybody under 2200.
In the same manner, the English can be avoided. 1.c4 e6 followed by 2...d5 will force a QGD or Reti rather than an English.
I would like it alot more if I could find a good way to avoid generic queens pawn positions after 1... Nf6. I like the way it handles 1... d5 w/ c4 and 1... c5 w/ the two knight sicilian. One idea is to play e3/b3. But that kind of begs the question why aren't you just playing 1. b3. Another idea is to play 2. Nc3. Those positions are almost never seen and there are some interesting lines, but I would rather just play a Jobava or Veresov. A third option is to just play the KIA... there's also an "improved" version of the Polish with 2. b4, though I haven't analyzed it, objectively it is superior and probably transposes. None of those options have been enough to make me play it.
KIA is probably a good line I just have never been drawn to it, it seems passive but maybe one day I'll give it a try. I also don't like the idea of systems openings. Especially if I'm not playing the full system.
