Your choice of games in the line has really convinced me. However, I remain faithful to 3...Qf6. Behold my startling victory, in which I played an almost-perfect game according to the computer!

*May or may not be a real game; the names, place, ratings, and moves may have been faked.

Well, I was somewhat joking. f5 is slightly objectively worse that a6 or Nf6 I believe, but much more fun

Anyways, I still like f5, and if I still played e5 I would always play it in Ruy given the chance.

Those games I gave were real OTB tournament games

you are FM now, good job! That is one of my eventual goals.

Refute this!

Does not refute the opening, just refutes the borning-ness of it.

Logozar - I think someone else on this site is using that avatar right now (I think it's a zoomed-in version of the one you're using). Not saying that you can't use it, of course, but I just wanted to let you know in case you didn't.

WOW!!! THESE GAMES ARE SO TERRIBLE!

You patzers all make mistakes. Only the enlightened people like me (along with Stockfish & Co) understand that the Ruy Lopez is unsound.

Thank you chesskingdreamer for supporting me by joking that Qf6 is a good move. Actually, it is the best move since all moves lose immediately.

A game played by a 1300 as white and a 1600 as black does not prove anything. I think you are trolling--you are ACTUALLY AND REALLY TRYING TO SAY THAT THE RUY LOPEZ IS SOUND!

I really can't believe that members of chess.com are actually saying this. And these are the people who are posting "I will be a world champion!". Really, they should know better than to call it a sound opening!

I dont f5 variation but It is good many strong players play it as suprise variation who has prepared everyone except this as it is not regularly played

lolurspammed

F5 isn't more fun. It usually leads to duller positions than out of the closed ruy..

Wantobegm

But it is a suprise for all those who have prepared for other variations of ruy lopezCool

The Ruy Lopez is a great starter opening to learn, but it is simple and does not have the ability to clinch an advantage in the beginning of the game, which is what an opening is supposed to do.

GM's claim the opening gives white an advantage, how dare you, a puny 1000, argue with the GM's?

But you are correct! THE RUY LOPEZ IS UNSOUND!

Here is ANOTHER, one of the MANY refutations of the Schliemman Gambit:

And that's it!

Finally you have an ounce of truth here. f4! indeed leads to only a slightly worse position for white, while the rest of the moves LOSE!

SonOfThunder2

I love this opening!

Iluvmarlies

these are the main things you need to know about the ruy lopez for black. have fun

Don't know for you but as for me they avoided the Marshall like the plague.

Unconvinced by "Patzer games"?

Well here are some other games that might convince you

Robert, first you say Ruy is a forced win, now you say it is refuted?

Thy Lopez is the worst opening that had come to the face of earth. It is boring, useless, lazy, stupid, greedy opening.

So that is what he's been saying? I also suspected that was the case, but I thought I was missing something. Looks like you have some explaining to do Robert!

SaintGermain32105

Right. Marshall played the Schliemann too. Missing the point, but anyway.
