I would think trying as many openings as you wish, is worthwhile, and not feeling you have to master any one opening. Trial and error. Play a lot, you may find the Sicilian is just right for you. Counter-tip

I've never read any middle game, or end game books. I just have read tournament books, or biographies, selected games, greatest games ever, etc. Stuff like that.
When you select an opening, make sure you have the time necessary to master it. Some openings, like the Sicilian Defense, are incredibly vast and complex and require countless hours to learn and understand. If you do not have the time, pick openings that are more "compact."tips
