When you select an opening, make sure you have the time necessary to master it. Some openings, like the Sicilian Defense, are incredibly vast and complex and require countless hours to learn and understand. If you do not have the time, pick openings that are more "compact."tips

trysts

I would think trying as many openings as you wish, is worthwhile, and not feeling you have to master any one opening. Trial and error. Play a lot, you may find the Sicilian is just right for you. Counter-tipSmile

What middlegame and endgame books do you recommend?

trysts

I've never read any middle game, or end game books. I just have read tournament books, or biographies, selected games, greatest games ever, etc. Stuff like that.

For the middlegame I like Euwe's two books on the Middlegame, simply titled :

Middlegame Book I and Middlegame Book II

For endings a great one to start with is Practical Chess Endings by Keres
