Top five openings for beginners to openings?

Hey,

this question is pretty much what it says on the tin. If I am a player who is not a good player, but is also not a terrible one, just one with little concept of book play and what pieces where will bring about postional advantage, then what are the best openings to start out experimenting with.

I mean this as a different question to what are regarded as the best openings in chess as I feel there will be some which are great if you are a 2000 rated player, but if somebody like me had a go it would be potential suicide.

So in peoples opinions, if I were to try out playing some book moves, where should I start? (And potentially vice versa with black.)

thanks in advance

This depends of your stile.

If you like to play for open positions and simple endgames the n play 1.e4

If you like to play tactics in the middle game the n try 1.d4

If you like to play both, tactic and open positions then i recomend you 1.c4.

hope it will help.

I would suggest you start with double e-pawn games (open e pawn games): Giuoco Piano, Evan's Gambit, Two Knights Defense, Four Knights, Petroff Defense, maybe King's Gambit.

Then progress to semi-closed e pawn games: Sicilian Defense, French Defense, Caro Kann, Pirc.

Among club playersm you'll encounter a lot of Giuoco Piano, Four Knights, Two Knights, Sicilian Defense, French Defense, and Philidor Defense.

Richard Reti in Masters of the Chessboard also advises beginners to play and study double KP openings before going on to play any single KP openings. You'll have to try using different openings in order to determine which ones you're the "luckiest" with and which ones you're the most "unluckiest" with and ditch the ones you have the least success with.  GOOD LUCK!
