@ThrillerFan - In that case, I'll consider @verylate to be Team Captain. He already expressed his willingness to do so. I'll wait for him to confirm.
Ultimate 1. e4 challenge
Does any team need more members? I really only play e5 so I don't know much of the rest but I could try.
@WPyellow - Team e5 needs members to build its strength. Please sign up. You'd be a relatively strong player on that team, based on your rating.
@verylate - Thanks for confirming. Is Team French short one player without me? I thought we had an extra. I still think Team e5 needs help, even if this individual signs up, but I don't want to delay the start of the matches.
Just the "Big Four" for this challenge.
I actually play a transposed Owen Defense (1. e4 e6 2. d4 b6) most of the time OTB, and the Nimzowitsch Defense was my standard 1. e4 defense before that. Perfectly sound defenses, but I really wanted to test the most popular 1. e4 replies, which are, in descending order or popularity, the Sicilian, 1. ..e5, the French, and the Caro-Kann.
He Beat Ossip Berstein with his eponymous gambit. Questionable if black gets sufficient compensation for the pawn after 2. exf5 Nf6, and to me the bigger concern is if white declines with 2. e5, but the accepted gambit is debatable. Black does get a considerable development advantage and the central pawn majority in exchange for the f-pawn. Is that enough? Certainly less than what white gets in the King's Gambit, but black is starting out with less, so it's unclear at best.
I thought verylate was going to do it, but if they need me to I guess I can. With work and upcoming things this summer - Over the Board tournaments tomorrow thru Sunday, July 9 thru 11, and July 23 thru 25, combined with a family get together July 15 thru 20, my availability is limited (I will have no problems making moves once every 3 days - just will have these 2 games and one other ongoing), and so I may not log in at the frequency you'd want a captain to log in, but if it is me, it is me.
