Unorthodox Opening - 1.h4

Sort:
billwall

The move 1.h4 is known as the Kadas Opening or the Despres Opening.  It is very rare and violates the principle of controlling the center.  But, since it is rare, why not play it to get out of the book fast.   I try to play it in blitz games on the Internet.  Here is one example.  1.h4 d5 2.d3 e6 3.Nf3 Bb4+ 4.c3 Bf8 5.Bf4 Qd7 6.Nbd2 Qb5 7.Nb3 c6 8.Nfd4 Qb6 9.e4 dxe4 10.dxe4 c5 11.Nb5 c4 12.Bc7 Qxb5 13.Qd8 mate  Wall-Delao, Internet 2004.  Another game went: 1.h4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.e4 d6 4.Bc4 Na5 5.Be2 h5 6.d4 exd4 7.Nxd4 c5 8.Nf3 Qf6 9.Nc3 Qg6 10.Nd5 Qxg2 11.Rg1 Qh3 12.Nc7+ and White won  Wall-Itza, Internet 2004.  After 1.h4 e5, you can always play 2.e4.  Here is an example.  1.h4 e5 2.e4 Be7 3.Nf3 Nc6 4.Bc4 h6 5.Nc3 Nf6 6.d3 Na5 7.Nxe5 O-O 8.Nxf7 Rxf7 9.Bxf7 Kxf7 10.e5 Nh7 11.Qf3+ Kg8 12.Qd5 and 13.Qxa5, winning  Wall-Guest1325, Internet 2005.  Another idea is this: 1.h4 e5 2.Nc3 Be7 3.e4 Bxh4 4.Bc4 Be7 5.Qh5 g6 6.Qxe5 Nf6 7.Nd5 O-O 8.Nxe7+ and White won, Welling-Ten Haaf, Eindhoven blitz, 1981.  And here is a correspondence game with 1.h4.  1.h4 Nf6 2.h5 e5 3.h6 g6 4.a4 d5 5.d3 Nc6 6.c3 Bg4 7.a5 Bd6 8.a6 b6 9.Bg5 Qe7 10.Qa4 Bd7 11.Qh4, and White won, Alcantara-Gil Corr 1985.  Of course, you want to avoid traps like this. 1.h4 e5 2.g3 Bc5 3.a3 Qf6 4.Nf3?? e4, winning the Knight or checkmating, Cog-Wall, Internet 2002.

Great openning. I have played it all my life.

I find the Advance Kadas very aggressive (1.h4, 2.h5, 3h6 etc). Have others played this also? How did you find it?

Fun for blitz but this wont get you to the top. Not to be taken seriously, and not to be underestimated. Black cant ask for too much from the opening and should equalise and be happy. Trying to mate white because he plays 1.h4 is the fools path to take and unfortunatley, alot of people as black will probably try to 'punish' white for such an inferior move. It is them who will fall victim to such unorthodox opening. Be warned but dont be scared =)

I played it about 20 years with good results.

Active, Correspondents, Blitz...

One of the Moscow Masters Schteinbek/?/  always played it, some time ago...

The Opening is correct! But it looks awful...

I promoted hundred Queens at the blitz games, here...

I was white in this game...

And billwall was black, but he doesn´t want to say it...

No, im joking

If you didn't play h4, you could've mated him one move earlier!Wink

This opening gives up tempo, is not that aggressive and doesn't allow for rapid deployment of your material.  For those reasons it seems to undermine and contradict the very principles of being white.  For those reason I would never use this opening in an OTB game, perhaps in a 5 minute blitz game it's fine though.

Would you use this OTB Billwall?

This opening is not by any means good, but it is no worse than being black. The pawn on h4 may create weaknesses, but white can use it to attack the kingside. There is another opening, similar but better, called Lasker Simul Special, which is 1. g3 h5. Black commits to a kingside pawnstorm on the first move.

The line with Bxh4 in the welling game makes no sense why white allowed it after. .g6
