1. g3

I've played that many times in serious games including OTB.

Nine times here on chess.com, mostly in rated match games.

Here's one.

In OTB tourneys, I usually play 1. e4 against masters. But I have played 1. Nf3 and 1. g3 against players rated 2199 and below for decades.

I like these opening moves because of their flexibility. White can play a stereotyped sequence of moves for the King’s Indian Attack. But White can also end up in a dozen or more different openings.

Because Black can set up many different pawn structures, White can transpose into lines that he is comfortable with. For example, White can play the Catalan or g3 variations of the King’s Indian or Gruenfeld, but he can also find himself playing the Benko Gambit, Gruenfeld, King’s Indian, and other openings with colors reversed.

Some strong players do not want to allow Black to have so many options. But I have been successful when I give lower-rated players more decisions to make. The more decisions they make, the more likely they are to make a mistake.

My two cents.
