Useful chess openings

What are some useful chess openings? I am a beginner at chess and i realize there are a dozen of chess openings out there, so is there any trick for sifting through this mass for useful openings? and what are some good openings for the black side of the chess board?

I prefer the Ruy Lopez as White, and have been recently experimenting with the Vienna Gambit as Black out of the hundreds of possible openings.  A few popular openings for Black are the Sicilian, Morphy's Defense, French Defense, and the Caro-Kann Defense.

Thx, I'll especially look into Ruy Lopez and the Sicilian since I hear about them a lot, and also look into the other ones you mentioned
