Using the Taimanov Sicilian against the Closed Variation

Sort:
Avatar of billy223
So I played a game where I use a fairly flexible approach to playing the Black pieces in the Sicilian and my opponent plays the Closed Variation. Move order started 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. g3 a6. The game was drawn after 60 moves. Is there a solid line that Black can play that gives more than drawing chances with this defense and are there any side line variations or traps that he has to be cautious of? Any game examples will be helpful. I will attempt to post the game from the website as I am posting this topic on my phone.

Forgive me for this but I cannot post the game from my phone. I can paste the PGN into a posting and if anyone wants to copy it into a game board they are welcome to do so.

As pawnstormpossie has pointed out, and i will repeat.

You are blindly playing moves without understanding the opening, or position.  Basically what you are doing is blindly memorizing moves with no understanding of the "why" behind the moves.

Whit goes for a KIA setup.  Certainly nothing wrong with it, but its slow.  Whites e4 pawn is farther advanced than blacks e6 pawn, which means white has more center control, and more space.  How do you take advantage of whites slow play, challenge the center, and contest whites space advantage?

You play 3...d5

There is a really good free book on chessable, com called:  Short and Sweet the Taimanov Sicilian.  I would highly recommend it.

thanks that helps a lot. I recently have been trying 3d5 in some games and now that you explained the rationale behind the move, I am going to keep working on it when White goes for a slower game.

I'm a firm believer in the K.I.S.S philosophy.

Keep

It

Simple

Stupid

Like i said...their is nothing wrong with whites KIA setup, but its slow.  If you're ever not sure what to do?  Keep It Simple.  Follow Opening Principles.  Fight for the center, gain space, find good squares for your pieces.  The rest will take care of itself.

It is possible to read explanations of sample games where White does not react to 1 e4 c5 with 2 Nf3.
