I think 3.g3 is a better positional option. After 3.Bc4 Black might try 3...Nxe4 when you have to play 4.Qh5 (4.Nxe4 d5) and go into a really complicated position.
Vienna Game Theory Question
Bc4 is not a good move. It leads to easy equality after 3. .. Nc6 but also 3. .. Nxe4 is good as long as you do not try to hang on your extra e5 pawn (4. Qh5 Nd6 5. Bb3 Be7 and black is okay)
Best bets as already explained here are f4 (leads to equality against a prepared black player but has some venom) or g3 leading to a slow game where white has a tiny advantage (but less then in normal lines of the Italian game)
What is wrong with the term Italian game ?
After 3. Bc4 Nc6 4. d3 Na5 white will lose his nice white squared bishop with little to no compensation how can the game not be equal ? My opening dvd ( a black repertoire against e4 vol 2 from Jan Gustafsson) claims it equal and his assesments are pretty acurate and not biased.
3. a3 is possible when White can play an advantageous version of the Steinitz Defence to the Scotch Game, reversed, because 3. a3 rules out ...Nb4:
So I play 1.Nc3 normally but my response to 1...Nf6 is 2.e4 which then often times transposes to the Vienna Game with black playing 2...e5. My question in regards to theory is which variation 3.Bc4 or 3.f4 is the more positional option? I know both can be quite wild at times but would like to know which is more likely to produce a quieter more manuevering position?
Which other variations should I consider?
