That one, typically for Fischer who was looking for winning chances, will lead to very complex positions. If straightforward play is the motivation then would recommend giving back the pawn with 3...d5, or the classical with 2...Bc5, which Marin recommended in one of his books. There are quite a few decent books which cover 1,e4 e5 open games for black.

I find it best to focus on your areas instead of worrying about open games. Create your own openings and your own novelties to take advantage of all the sad chess orthodocks who insist upon everyone playing OPEN games. The Buffchix systems ignore all their stupid played out e4's, and punish them for their unoriginality! ~SPICE~ up your chess!
Debuff your ego, amigo, U are not Kirito of 99th level. ![]()

Thanks TilliBilly! Your response was the most detailed and I appreciate the effort you put in. I shall investigate further.
A lot depends on what you are trying to achieve. Are you looking to win? Or are you looking for equality? The latter may lead to a win, but it amounts to how much risk you are willing to take.
If you want safety and an easy game to play, then the line with 2...Bc5 is an excellent idea. I have played it many times myself, and still do over the board if a draw is satisfactory. Granted, it is rare that I end up in this situation as I play the French over the Petroff about 90% to 10% of the time, and when I do play 1...e5, now you have to combine it with the infrequency of 2...f4.
If you are looking for the kill shot, I recommend the Modern Variation. The lines are different between 3.Nf3 and 3.Bc4, but the idea is basically the same.
1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 (The line can also be reached via 2...d5 3.exd5 exf4 4.Nf3, but I prefer to take first as I think the 3.Bc4 line is even worse for White) 3.Nf3 (3.Bc4 d5! and now 4.exd5 Bd6 blocks the Bishop, or 4.Bxd5 Nf6 gains time for development as White surely does not want to relinquish his better Bishop for a Knight) 3...d5! 4.exd5 Bd6
I have yet to lose with this line over the board, and I can't even recall a time that White has drawn. Done with are my days of 3...g5, which I have lost with.

I'm looking for something with winning possibilities of course. I'm a class A play OTB. This means there are some tournaments where the quality of opponents is such that I need to win most if not all my games, while others I can play more safely. It really depends how close in rating my opponents are to me. So I do need lines with some complications as drawing is often not good for me if I'm playing some B class player. Anything C class or below doesn't matter because they will blunder eventually giving me a free point.
It rhymes! But my ego stay buffed, yigo you talk tough but your chess soft. True that I type "99" instead of "gg", but I'm on the 666th level, jeje.
- My talk is tough
- But my heart is soft
- It's not all fluff
- To be beloved
- My flight is high
- But my wings are soft
- It's not enough
- To hold aloft.
