Weird opening ay..?

If my arguments are flawed you should be able to explain why. I'm inclined to agree that there is nothing much wrong with 1. f4, especially for players below master rank. I don't often play it myself, but I have done - and so have people up to and including Emanuel Lasker.

I did, and it has nothing to do with how many masters are playing it right now.

Also, how did I almost lose to that crappy opening? So whats the best approach to overcome the "polish"? Thanks in advance!

It's not a crappy opening, just a crappy variation proposed by the OP.

I have probably 200 tournament games over the board playing this as White!

However, much, MUCH stronger is 1.b4 e6 2.Bb2 (Black can't take on b4 because after 2...Bxb4?? 3.Bxg7, the Rook falls) Nf6 3.b5!

3.b5 is far stronger than 3.a3.  If Black attacks it with pawns, White will play a4 and/or c4, move the King's pawn to e3 to have the Bishop back it up, etc.  White's strongpoint is b5, and makes Black's development of his queenside pieces a major problem.

In return, Black gets the center.  Don't forget the old adage.  An attack on the flank is best countered by an attack in the center!

"drunken Irish clown" is double redundant.

To to the OP, in regards post #6...Regardless of what time controls you are playing you should be finishing games. Your attitude of "might work in longer time controls" is off base, I believe.

f4 is a very posistional. allowing dark square control, and it allows the bishops to be played activly, hence the birds .

if ims and gms are playing the birds, then nothings wrong with it,its a very posistional and calculated maneuver and need to be played cautiously.

if you like closed posistional chess a6 for black d3 for white youll need a nasty endgame for those. i like prefer endgames.

standard =e4,e5,nf3,f6 night takes e5. would you accept the knights gammit ??

All I'm saying is that there is no reason for 1.f4 to be considered a bad first move, your arguments are flawed.

It ended badly for the idiot who tried the "polish" against me, bottom line is they lost and I won, so therefore I am not outta line here bragging...If you go by simple results, and facts.........I am simply better than the idiot who played the "polish", good or bad, sound opening or whatever you say, they lost and I won. The opinions here are invalid as I have won and am the better player.Cool
