Any good Jedi chess player knows that dark-side openings are any starting move other than pushing the Queen's pawn forward two squares.  All Queen pawn openings are light-side openings.

May d4s be with you.

Could it be, maybe, just maybe, he meant learn some openings as black?

Loomis

No, it couldn't mean that.

You don't know what Dark Side Openings are? Haven't you ever heard of the Vader Gambit, Darth Maul Attack, and Death Star Defense?

Ohgod. That was a brilliant pun. Now showing friends and workmates...well, that's what I'd like to do, but none of them play chess. Meh.

I saw the thread this involves yesterday, and I understand the concept.

The player in question was just using Star Wars as a metaphor- he says that learning openings is the 'Dark Side' of the force; that is, you gain rating points quickly, but then you reach a peak. Learning the middlegame is the lighter side, you improve steadily but can reach a much higher peak.

Kernicterus

so there are no darkside openings, huh.  Sicilian seems dark.

The kings gambit would easily qualify as a darkside opening, I'm convinced if you learn enough variations you can beat any club level player in 20 moves.

I don't think you can, I think that the problem with the Kings Gambit is that is not developed enough to launch a sophisticated attack!

Dark square openings.

rigamagician

The Darkside openings are the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit, Frankenstein-Dracula Gambit, Halloween Gambit, Elephant Gambit, etc.  Adds a good 200 points to your elo easily.  They are named after Hugo Darkside, a regular at Simpson's Divan on the Strand in London. Wink

Or the ryder gambit rigamagician

No.

theoreticalboy

Embrace the darkside, openings, cherry salsa, and hyperventilating cactii.

See, the comma is ineffective.  More correct would be 'Embrace the darkside: openings,' or, if you want to get all hoi-polloi about it, 'embrace the darkside - openings.'

Loomis

theoreticalboy, the original comment actually used parenthesis, which are fine. A comma would also be fine because there was no list. "Embrace the darkside, openings." Couldn't be mistaken for a list because a comma would not be used in a list of 2.
