what are your opinions on the reti?

now of course nf3 first move is good. there is no way to say it's not truly. considering the fact that black can't do any gambits against the opening.

(i know ross gambit can lead into a stafford, but its easier to just decline, plus, are we really saying g5 is an opening here..?)

so you don't have any worries about gambits. the only moves black has are c5, d5, and nf3, (not counting 1 square pawn moves because those transpose into everything.)

The second move is super simple. if literally anything except d6, nc6, or b5 Tarkatower, Black mustang and Polish, you can go c4. and from there everything plays out.

most common postion by far is a simple queens gambit declined/semi slav. following that is the kings indian. and the only other postions you have to know are the reti gambit accepted, and the reti gambit main line reverse blumfeld.

i suppose you can count nf3 c5 c4... but i mean, who plays c5 against nf3 anyways.

but ya, of course you can choose to go for a kings indian attack, or a queenside fianchetto of sorts too. so you have options there.

do you guys think this is a better move than d4 and e4 due to the versatility? or do you think the positions are simply not good enough compared to others?

And no, c4 sucks. if you play c4 first move, you might aswell just play nf3 first move anyways. because e5 into c6 is simply too strong for black.

might aswell tell me your favorite openings while you're at it. (and yes the caro for black is my favorite.)

I usually find it easier to improvise with Nf3. A lot of Sicilian players play c5 against Nf3, fyi

"now of course nf3 first move is good" ++ Yes

"the fact that black can't do any gambits against the opening."
++ Do not worry about gambits. Most gambits are unsound.

"who plays c5 against nf3 anyways" ++ Fischer for example

"do you guys think this is a better move than d4 and e4 due to the versatility?" ++ No

"do you think the positions are simply not good enough compared to others?"
++ No, 1 Nf3 is about as good as 1 c4, 1 d4, or 1 e4.
See Fig. 5 & 31 https://arxiv.org/pdf/2111.09259.pdf

"c4 sucks" ++ No, it may even be a bit better than 1 Nf3. One of the finesses is that 1 c4 Nf6 2 Nc3 g6 3 e4 avoids the Grünfeld Defense and forces black into a King's Indian Defense.

"if you play c4 first move, you might aswell just play nf3 first move anyways"
++ No, Botvinnik for example played c4 with later e3 and Nge2

"e5 into c6 is simply too strong for black"
++ Botvinnik believed 1 c4 e5 Sicilian Defense with an extra tempo to be good for white.

I like it but I don't love it. When I play the Retí, me being the bad player I am wants a Quiet System and a beautiful positional game to come from it. I used to play the Retí Gambit as my main opening but it got mixed results at best.
