what do i do against early Bb4+ in the Catalan? Common motifs, etc.

It's really annoying, and I score very poorly as white (a miserable 39%!)

I just feel like I really get lost and handle the game poorly. These kings indian structures are super annoying.

My most recent game here, where I played terribly until both sides got into time pressure and I swindled my opponent.

If I had lost these, my score against Bb4 would be even worse than my current 39%... I just don't know any common motifs in this opening. It seems to me with best play white can't try for an advantage, but neither can black, because the position just plays itself... Right now I feel like my best bet is just to try to draw all the games I have in this position by trading off all the heavy pieces.

2Kf21-0

just play good

Vinumonz555

I score way less than 39. Its 3.9

Valleta-Chan

Bruh I just block with the bishop like you did. Is there a problem about the Bb4+ line though? It's not played that much at the 1500 level.

why not just prevent it beforehand, or would that go against everything

a3 and I think black can just enter a normal catalan with d5 and white has wasted a3 and probably is losing already

Yes. I think @B1zMark should try playing a3 after opponent plays e5/e6

no it's cuz in the middlegame I just feel like I'm going through the motions, I can't find a cohesive plan besides "push my queenside pawns and hopefully ill win somehow", that's not 2300 play, I don't want to keep playing it like this

JackRoach

Why not just Nc3?

a3 is bad

I don't like the doubled pawns, and I can handle the resulting structure even less well than I can handle the Bd2 one. because at least it resembles some sort of KID, which I've studied.

No, I just analyzed and the engine said a3 is a good move. Ig u should play a3 instead of g3?

bd2 is your best move, guess it was just your middlegame I guess

That's exactly what I was asking for help on...

You were literally playing best moves left and right I have no idea how you got such a low acc

sndeww

yeah i was playing the good moves but so was my opponent, except his play was easier. Open the a file, invade on the a file, cause trouble. Meanwhile white had to hold his everything.

ninjaswat

I think just Nc3 and accept the pawns, it keeps the diagonal of your bishop open (if d5 ever you can trade off one of the doubled pawns) and therefore benefits the Catalan Bishop but creates a weakness. Maybe check some GM games in that line?

sndeww

Right, but I've tried it before, I don't like my position after Nc3, not because it's bad but because I don't know it.

Then learn it.
