what do i need to complete my opening repertoire? as white and black

Testrider

For a complete repetoire you need a decent reply to every sane move the opponent makes in the first few moves.

What you need to complete your repetoire depends on what you allready have ;-)

ericmittens

Yes indeed, post what your repertoire looks like right now and we can suggest some lines to fill the holes.

If you don't have time for a complete repetoire concentrate on responses to e4 and d4 since they are most commen and can be cannibalised to counter other moves.

OK i know  the Sicilian defence but not that well. french and caro kann as a response to 1 e4. need a 1 d4 defence. not sure how to play kings Indian if white plays knight out first or reti or whatever its called. as white i always play 1 e4. depending what black plays i can usually manage.

thanks Rob\\\ whats the spanish?

dc1985

The spanish is the Ruy Lopez, meaning 1.e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5. Agood opening, but if you always play 1.e4, you need to move to an opening such as the Queens Gambit... mabye even trying the English(1.c4) or the Kings Indian Attack. as black, I think you're pretty well off, mabye learning something to combat 1.d4, such as the Slav or Kings Indian Defence.

zzega1126

why move to a queens gambit?? thats not 1 e4 why change my 1 e4

zzega1126

can anyone explain the slav to me???

OMGdidIrealyjustsact

The slav is 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 It is quite a complicated opening so I wouldn't recommend it. KID is probably a better choice as it uses similar systems and Black doesn't have to worry so much about what white does.

jpd303

start every game with e6 and d5 as black you cant go wrong! seriously 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 all good...1d4 e6 2.c4 d5...1.d4 e6 2.nf3 d5...1.nf3 e6 2. c4 d5....etc  learn french and QGD classical positions and you ll get a feel for the general tone of this all purpose opening move order

ksep

slav is GM favorit opening

zzega1126

soo slav is just a queens gambit declined

I have wondered. since i am returning to competive chess. Is there tech one black opening you could play for everything?

I mean couldnt u play a sicilian for everything? I mean if they push d4 then u delay the c5 until after u push d6? and if they play the english u just go ahead and push c6. I mean I am just getting back into chess so this is prob laughable. But it seems it coudl work.

I realise at 1800+ you would really need to get alot mroe into opening work. But till then couldnt u do one white and then the sicilian and do well? Heck I am jsut rambling I guess not alot of sleep last night.

Not really. However, it's possible to play similar openings which share common themes, so it makes the learning easier (at first...)

For example, as black, you could try and play :

  • 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nd7 (the Caro-Kann defense) against 1.e4 and
  • 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 dxc4 5.a4 Bf5 (the classical slav defence) against 1.d4
  • 1.c4 c6 2.Nf3 d5 against 1.c4
  • 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 c6 against the Reti

and with this starting repertoire, you'll end up play similar positions whatever white plays.

However, even if your repertoire is very economical, there comes a time when you have to think for yourself... Smile

M.Botvinnik wrote once that a serious player's opening repertoire must include at least three good systems for handling the white side as well as other three when conducting black pieces;but these opening choices,Botvinnik says, must be throughly studied, and of course, should fit the player's style.
