What is the best opening?

To me, chess is the most fun when I widely vary my openings. It slows down my development at first, but I feel it's best in the long run; and since, like I said, I'm having fun, that's not an issue to me :) I fully expect to nail down a bunch of openings in quick succession one day because I'll have at least a basic to moderate understanding of so many of them.

As for my favorites, though? Probably the Ruy Lopez or Reti for white and the Alekhine Defense for black. I also like the following opening for both sides, but I can't remember its name:

1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 g6 3. c4 Bg7

^ That opening leads to some really fun games IMO.

If there was a "best" opening, it would be the only opening.

Asking which opening is "best" leads to more questions than answers. Namely, "best for what?"

What do you want from an opening? Wild kingside bumrush? Open tactical melee? Closed positional grind? Rock solid defense? Ability to trade down to a positive endgame?

There are many openings to choose from for each thing you are looking for. Of course, each opening has its minuses as well.

Conquistador

The Bongcloud of course.

Theoretically, since there are a finite number of possible positions in chess, there is a "best" opening, but until quantum computers are invented there is no possible way of telling what that opening is.

Thern there's the additional irony that a quantum computer's "best" opening would be premised on perfect play from the opponent and that, therefore, there is a real possibility that it wouldn't be the most in practice effective opening since humans don't play perfectly.  It's nice to have that "I bet my opponent makes this mistake here, so I'm going to play this now" factor.

Ridiculous.

If 1.e4 is best, why was it never played in Anand-Topalov?

If the Caro-Kann is not included in the list of playable defenses against 1.e4, why is it one of the most trusted and solid?

In human chess there is no best opening. It is about surprising your opponent and having more knowledge than your opponent about a position that is arguably not as good as you could potentially get, but will give you the plus because of your study.

Best Opening Name?

Hmmm..I like the Black Knight Tango, The Hippopotamous and the Mongoose variation

Salaskan

For white the Catalan, for black the Sicilian and the Nimzo, according to grandmaster opinion.

that is not an argument and you know it. gms probably wish to avoid the berlin wall or unrightfully dread the najdorf. e4,on the average provides a greater opening advantage and leads to the kind of play where white can exert more pressure. many defences are readily lost for black if white plays correctly.

right,i completely forgot about the CK there is this one line in the CK advance that equalizes: Bf4-Ne7-Nd7-c5 or  Bf4-Ne7-c5

the only playable lines against d4,lie within the:

nimzo indian,bogo indian,blumenfeld gambit,two knight's tango

not sure about the grunfeld but it has a very dubious reputation, same goes for the QGD primarly cause it may lead to the fearsome exchange-central advance variation

the catalan, reti,KIA and english are all very easy to meet.

I love how you ignored the important part of my post and just got butt-hurt that I said your opinion wasn't universally correct.

thread is kinda old but I understand where the questioner is coming from.

When I first started playing chess I lived in a part of the country where the people I knew all talked about all these different openings they had memorized.   It was daunting to me.

I took some lessons from an old Russian master and he said "forget about trying to memorize so much ... look for the best move on the board"

If you are playing against people who have learned a lot of openings that is difficult.    So Zimel taught me the Italian and Ruy Lopez for white which are good openings for white to learn to start with.

After you play those for a while, go on YouTube and look at Queen pawn openings and pick something that suits your style.   Some people like to develop and stay back and others like an attacking game.

Personally I have found if I don't play a sharp game, then my opponent will and I'll be trying to develop while my opponent is laying traps and taking pieces, so my game has gotten more aggressive over the years.

I like the Scandinavian for black, but that is just me.   Lots of people like the accelerated Dragon for Sicilian, but the Sicilian is so deep for so many levels, I have left that for when I have more experience.  I just trying to play carefully and look for mistakes my opponent makes.

Sometimes you will see your opponent forgetting one side of his board or the other and you can sacrifice a piece to distract your attack.   Most of all, have fun and enjoy the game !

I'd say the best openings are the ones you have studied and know best. The more you know the better. but when learning them, don't just jump around, get to know maybe a couple at a time and by getting to know them, I mean learning and getting a sense of how the middle games play out as well, or the possiblities of if I play this opening what type of game may arise, and figuring out what type of player you are.

1. h4!!!!! :-p

Ima have to say Parham. Recently watched a 5-part video IM Andre Martin did on the Parham. Here's a few quotes he said:

"And White has all the chances here".-This is true of the Parham. Even after the mainline, white is still attacking, Black is defending.

"This opening is much better than its reputation".-Another truth. Most people, especially on here, look down on this because of moving the queen out early, but he analyzed a few games and showed that it does much better than most percieve.

it depends on your prferences: u like active counterattacks or strategic play or defence...
