too much work cuts both ways. it becomes your advantage when you already put in the work, as now the other guy has to do the work. i think that's the main reason that both the sicilian and the open games are up there and significantly far ahead of everything else. they lead to many different types of pawn structures and positions that it makes preparation hard, for both players.

I know but for the CM title you have to play in Fide rated tournaments
This is the tree and statistics in my bigger database after 1.e4 but only for games played after 2010 in ICCF (Internation Correspondence Chess Federation). That's mostly computer games and so the high % of games drawn.

Theres alot of theory, the game could go alot of different ways in the opening. Memorizing 1600 variations and a depth of 20 doesnt matter at normal people rating levels so if you like 1e4 e5 play it. I doubt your opponent has all the theory memorized. I got away from it though myself. I like playing openings where i have a better chance of steering the game in certain direction. Thus i study what i play cause i know 98% of the time i will see it on the board.
