Chessgames.com has on the Scotch
Number of games in database: 13042
Years covered: 1819 to 2024
Overall record:
White wins 36.1%
Black wins 30.7%
Draws 33.1%
95% are master games and above ... this is average stats and preferable by many professionals.
Many get lost in stats and misinterpret the data.
Example the Kings Gambit from the same data base
White wins 49.2%
Black wins 32.3%
Draws 18.5%
Many see the 49% win ratio as great, it is, but it's double edged. Black's win ratio is high also and the draw percentage is low. it's an opening where you either win, or you loose... Question: "Is that something you want to use in a tournament ?" IDK, it's up to the individual.. I would think if your playing for rent money and ELO points translate into invitations to all the top tournaments , something that cut and dry is not optimum.
(IMO ... the above accounts for the KG not being seen at the higher levels... cause there is nothing wrong with the KG... hasn't been refuted... its just all tactical/no positional)
People look only at the stats of openings at master level and above. Is that correct? If you are not an NM, IM, or GM. why assume your opponent will play like one????
If at the 1500 elo, the opening is scoring a 60% win ratio... and the player using the opening is 1500 elo. The stats say that person would be wining at or around 60%. using that opening. (and that happens all the time... we all have heard.. " I dropped that opening when I got above xyz elo, and couldn't get nowhere with it. )
People also look at the stats of the opening without looking and specific win/loss %... of specific positions (and how the positions came about!!! ) The stats of an opening can be deceiving. The stats look good up until a certain move then flip flop, going from good to bad.
People banter around stats ... but do they really understand them? I wonder.
