What kind of opening is this?

The opening your opponent played is french defence...you played the opening very well indeed without knowing about it...your opponent should have played 4...Nd7 instead of Ne4. In french the black's white squared bishop is a weakness, so you should not try exchanging it in the beginning.

It's the french defence. Black usually plays 4...Nfd7 which is the tarrach variation. This one goes out of book on move 4.

i just tried to stick to opening principles, develop pieces and fight for control of the middle. im happy to know i played well against it. i will not put my white-square bishop up for easy exchange next time i meet this opening. i need to look into the opening a bit more though, as it took me by suprise
