indeed. I play the Caro•Kann but even I wouldn't say it's THE Solid defense against 1. e4. Certainly it staunches any opening fireworks if white tries to over run you from the start but there are residual concessions that linger going into the middlegame. On the other hand, if you're experienced you know the feeling of breaking alot of the hearts of over aggressive opponents.

The Alekhines defence used to be my main weapon vs. e4, but nowadays I am playing the Portugese and Icelandic gambits more often.

Nothing wrong with the Caro-Kann; it’s very solid and you play it well against the English.
