What opening do you prefer to counter the sicilian?

Sort:

Fischer-Sozin Attack with Bc4, 0-0, f4, f5 or the variations with Bc4 Be3 Qe2 0-0-0. The 0-0-0 variations are really fun. @blueemu had a great game in that variation, you can message him/her about it.

HolographWars

Closed Sicilian

early f4, gp attack

Play early bb5

Daniel_M_BCC

E4, C5, C3...and go from there...

the alpin?

Daniel_M_BCC

to be fair, they're plenty of options with the c3... just makes sense to fight for/control d4 with the pawn imo

Daniel_M_BCC

but I'm no expert... however GM's use various c3 systems so if it's good enough for them...

#10 The Smith Morra is good at club level, best for players under 1600 but it's also playable 1600-2000. White's plan is pretty much the same in all variations. This is the main line:

The only counter against the Morra gambit is when they transpose to the Alapin:

I also play the Grand Prix, mostly because it meshes well with the rest of my repertoire. I like the Smith Morra (the main line that NonSequitur7 posted tempted me for a moment!), but at the end of the day the Alapin seems a little too dry. Or "disorganized", maybe?

What do you not like about the Grand Prix that you like about the Alapin?

well, i dont like the alapin as well, but the smith morra is an attacking gambit, and it seems necessary to gambit a pawn for an attacking position

I don't even play e4, join the c4 community. You don't have to study that much. It gives a nice queenside attack.

TwoMove

In the open sicilian with 2Nf3, followed by 3d4 don't have to play the most theoretical lines. For example Be2, followed by king-side castling is reasonable against most of black's tries. The resulting positions have more potential than most anti-sicilian lines.

Alpin varition is the best to counter sicilian

RoadToImproving

I like the c3 sicilian (the delayed alapin variation)
