What opening or two should I focus on first as a new player?

I would say Italian game and Queen's gambit.

Yeah I like this for beginners. You get into tactics quickly with the White pieces and it's good to be comfortable with that kind of thing. Ruy Lopez is usually mentioned by GMs but it seems to me that in that opening the players just move their pieces around randomly until someone spots a tactic or something. At least with the Italian you can play with the initiative and have some kind of plan worked out. With Black I like 1.e4 e5 and 1.d4 d5 because the moves seem a bit more "logical" for beginners.

I would suggest Ruy Lopez as White. It is a basic opening. Sure there could be zillions of variations but that could be said of any sound opening.

If you play this, even if you do not know the follow ups, you will usually be as ok as the opponents you will play against.

Petroff and the Four Knights (both colors.)

So far, I've found the conservative route to be the best method. I've been starting white with a focus on Four Horsemen and slowly building my centre. It forces me to look for tactics and positional play. For black, I'm still very weak and mostly respond with king pawn out vs king pawn out or french defence to almost everything else.

Has t3sk0 been here since 2015?

You should start with the Ruy Lopez, then the Italian, then the Spanish, and finally the Giuoco Piano. Only then should you consider learning the Queen's Gambit. Unfortunately, some opponents will force you to contend with the Sicilian, the French, the Scandinavian (no worries there), and Hell's spawn the Caro-Kann.

Take your repertoire through the stages of chess history itself. Embrace first the openings favored by Ruy Lopez, the Modenese masters, Gioachino Greco, and on up to Paul Morphy. Learn all you can about the reasons fro their success. Imitate it.

FOR WHITE :TRY TO LEARN THE KNIGHTS OPPENING - THE MOST SIMPLE AND THE  SAFEST IN MY OPINION.

FOR BLACK: LEARN FRENCH

I think post-1884 players have been somewhat more likely to play alternatives to 1...e5 in reply to 1 e4. By the way, has t3sk0 been here since 2015?

I recommend the Sicilian Najdorf and Dragon. Very solid lines with opportunities for both players

It is a matter of taste.

If you need to catch up on sleep then try out the London with 1.d4 or the Alapin/Bishop's opening with 1.e4. If you actually like chess then play anything else.

For each of the openings discussed in the (3-part) video above be sure to pay attention to whether they are referring to White or Black’s perspective. Also, they frequently refer to some openings as "garbage" or "bad", etc., but these qualifiers are used in the context of how appropriate or advisable they are for beginners. For example, an opening they refer to as "garbage" (an unfortunate choice of terms) for a beginner may in fact be reasonable/playable for higher rated players (Intermediates, titled players, etc. (see their openings tier list for Intermediate players below).
