I've liked the Slav for a long time because the idea behind the defense is to get your "Bad Bishop," your QB, developed to f5 or g4 before ...e6 blocks it in, which occurs in QGD or -against 1 e4 - the French.

The game can be opened up by either side by White playing cxd5 or Black playing ...dxc4 - a delayed QGA position without the Black QB blocked-in.  Black can also begin a counterattack with ...c5 or ...b6 where a N at d7 and the KB both support it.

The game can also be played closed where Black eventually has Pawns at e6 and c6 and, after exchanging his d-Pawn, he can post a N at d5 with good results.

After Black plays ...Bf5, White often does one of two things:

1. White plays Bd3 where Black then almost automatically exchanges his Bad Bishop for White's Good Bishop!

2. White plays Nf3 then Nh4, attacking Blacks f5-B.  Black usually plays ...Bg6 and White often figures he benefits by exchanging a N for a B, but after Nxg6 hxg6, Black has more Pawn support for the center and a straight shot for his KR at White's h-Pawn - and White's best castling position is K-side.

I usually play the Tarrasch Defence, or the Albin Countergambit.
