So I was playing chess with my friend but then he pulled out THIS monstrosity of an opening… I had no clue what in the world it was, so I just played the KID (excuse my bad moves we played a 3 min game) Can someone tell me what the heck’s this is??

That is emphatically "Irregular Opening" aka the "Sack of [insert profanity of choice]".

I'm not sure if your friend could have played a worse opening if he'd set out to do so. I mean, the main purpose of Nc3 before c4 is to support e4, but he opened with e3. Then, after g6, he plays Bd3 before d4, biting into the granite that was just formed, then moves the bishop again on the next move Bb5, to which you could have responded c6 and he'd need to move it a third time. You responded Bd7 and he should have traded, but he didn't... which means he now has to move the knight twice. There's not a name for that, other than "retarded"

I think your Friend is trying to play a Colle Rubstein or Bird Opening.

It looks like he has the concepts in his mind, but is also messing up the ideas and leaving out ideas.

The above position is actually normal even though that isn’t the typical move orders.

Normally, when you have Piece Lay out like above, the way chess players generally proceed is by Fianchetto the Dark Bishop.

White will usually play like above.

Then they will play either d4 or f4.

- d4 turns the position into like Colle Rubstein.

- f4 turns the position into like Bird Opening.

In this set up, White Light Square Bishop can go to a few places.

It can go on b5, d3, or e2.

It seems like your Friend sort of knew where the pieces belong so he tried putting them on those squares, but he just didn’t understand the ideas behind the moves to completely understand why he should do it or not do it.

He also didn’t Fianchetto which is odd.

Perhaps, he saw you doing a Fianchetto so he changed his mind.

The opening started off promising, but it ultimately did go astray.

A real shame for sure.

It would have been amazing to see you fight against a Rival Fianchetto line.

Only 1 would have survived - What a shame we didn’t get to witness it!
