What to choose- MARSHALL OR BERLIN??

Hello guys if you face ruy lopez in any of ur match what defence would you consider? Would u opt for the solid defensive Berlin defence or the comparatively attacking marshall gambit?

redchessman

Aronian plays the Marshall for a draw and Berlin for a win.

But i feel that marshall is having a space for more intense combat in the middle game whereas initial skirmishes and mostly the exchange of queens takes away the heat

Well, at least you can play the Berlin at move 3. I bet you can easily play ten Ruy Lopezs trying to get to the Marshall without ever reaching it, so it's really comparing apples to oranges.

I agree that both are way... Different. Still by playing which are u more comfortable given that your opponent will accept the marshall gambit?

If you like a super-bookish opening, and/or like playing gambits, and/or like sharp tactics, choose the Marshall. If you don't like any of these options don't play it, and I'd suggest not playing the Berlin either, which is dull, dour and dismal - at least in my experience as Black. Try Petroff's Defense instead of the RL which is considerably less popular and therefore has considerably less theory attached to it. As you are unrated I'm guessing, hopefully correctly that you are a beginner or novice. If I'm wrong, I recommend the Modern Steinitz Defense as Black vs RL because in my 50 yrs of playing chess (NS) I have yet to recall seeing anyone play it vs me OTB or in CC, so it might not be too hard to learn more about it than most of your opponents will know.

But, whatever you decide on, GOOD LUCK!

open ruy lopez could be a good alternative.
