See this game with notes from Alekhine, Chess Base and MCO: The first 2 sources call it a Ruy Lopez (Old) Steinitz Defense, but MCO claims it's a transposition from the Philidor's Defense. It's your call...

Of course, there are positions that can arise from many different openings, and although ECO is often used as a standard (if possible), that's not official at all.

Arctor

My call is that it's a chess position and it doesn't matter what you call it

Arctor it does matter when you try looking it up not only by english name but by ECO classification - ie where did ECO place the opening, and what is it known as in an openings index that uses names?  (see below)

paulgottlieb    you're right the CKD PB Attack/NID/QGD "complex" can be quite confusing, since it ends up being arbitrary what chess writers and chess books/mags name an opening that can be reached via several transpositions. I've also been confused by the "difference(s)" if any between the Benoni Defense and KID Yugoslav Var.
