it's nothing. d6 is out of book. before d6 it was the italian game.

looks like italian game or a botched philidor defense, neither of which gets good results on average.

 I dont know which books you have but this move is in several of my books and the 4th most played move for black in the position after the more common Bc5, or Nf6 or Be7.  After 4. d4  Be7 it beomes a mainline of the Hungarian defense. White has 3 good moves at move 4 :  d4, d3 and Nc3 all score well for white. In the Philidor the N/b8 almost always goes to d7 and not c6.

My favourite is the main line. Bc5. If you play d6 just be careful of Legall's mate
