When should white take the d5 pawn in Queen's gambit declined lines?

Can someone give me some general rules for the QGD? Mainly when should white take the d5 pawn. Thanks in advance.

I would say as a rule thumb, White should not take the d5 pawn without a plan.  There are however variations where he does, specifically the exchange variation where White wants to play a minority attack on the queenside.

Get the old Sadler book on the QGD, and study it carefully. One of the very best opening books ever written, and quite suitable for new players.

Play the QGD exchange.  Then the rule is easy.  "Move 4."

After 3...c6 or 3...Be7 there is no typical QGD exchange. And other than that, the really dangerous white plan in the exchange variation isn't the minority attack, but rather the Nge2-f3-e4 Botvinnik scheme.

A rule of thumb: don't exchange on d5 if this allows black to develop his QB to f5.
