If you are a student preparing for a major exam a few months away, you would not be having time to study chess. To play e4 means one has to learn many replies to it - each with its own myriad of variations. The same goes for c4 and f4.
Why not stick to what you know? I see nothing wrong by just learning how to play 1 d4, 2 Nf3, 3 e3. Makes it easier to get a game without wandering into any traps.
