Before?
....my life...is a lie.
All are equal, though personally I now take c4 over d4, and just transpose into lines Im happy playing (slav, KID, QGD) while trading the others off for symmetrical and reverse dragon positions.
C4 is a flank attack if i remember correctly. A player must learn to play e4 or d4 before learning something like this b3 , b4 , c4 , f4 etc.
i have never played 1.e4 or 1.d4 in a tourney (or even 1.c4 or 1.nf3) this is by no means a universal rule.
1. d4 controls two central squares unlike any other first move, except for Nc3 and Nf3 which also control two squares. But I prefer to push my pawns first.

what on earth do you even play??? Nimzo-Larsen or Nc3?
i play e4 but sometimes i play Nf3 and it can be a reti opening or change to Queen´s gambit (c4,d4)
