who knows a good program for learning openings?

"Improve Your Opening Play!" by Ward or "Ideas Behind the Openings" by Fine are good. I don't know of any software matching their level of instruction for learning general opening plans and concepts and the ideas behind every opening.
Next, there's the "Starting Out:" series by Everyman Chess that goes into more detail about one opening per book.
And finally there's software like Big Database 2008 ($50) with millions of master games to study or chesspublishing.com ($20-$100) with thousands of annotated master games. chess.com is going to release their game explorer soon if you can wait!
BookUp helps you to memorize lines.

an excellent beginning book is
"Chess Opening Essentials - Volume 1: The Complete 1.e4"
by Djuric, Komarov and Pantaleoni.
This book covers all the 1.e4 openings at the level of the beginning and improving player. The presentation is very well organized. Each opening has it's own start page and the diagrams utilize color to emphasize important points. The information is not crammed together as in so many other chess books. I do not know if they have yet published Volume 2 but this first volume should keep you busy until the 2nd volume becomes available (which I hope is soon).

wormrose, I've read a couple chapters of that and agree it's good and worth consideration! It goes into more depth... both a blessing and a curse. I roughly agree with Dennis Monokrousso's evaluation, "my initial reaction is that it's a book that this is a very useful book for players in the 1500-2000 range."
Basic Opening Overviews (USCF 1200-1700)Improve Your Opening Play covers the Caro-Kann in 2 pages and is modern.
Ideas Behind the Openings covers the Caro-Kann in 5 pages and is older.
Understanding the Chess Openings covers the Caro-Kann in 5 pages and is moden.
Intermediate Opening Overviews (USCF 1500-2000)
Chess Opening Essentials covers the Caro-Kann in 26 pages and is modern.
Mastering the Chess Openings covers the Caro-Kann in 19 pages and is modern.
Bookup. Reuben Fine's book is a good book to have. But the program Bookup will show you the moves to virtually every opening. They're not listed by name but you simply click on the move and the responses are given in order of most common usage.
The program is free.

i need to study openings and i want to know which programs are useful. Are there any useful downloadable ones on chess.com?
