Why are people so obsessed by trading pawns in the French?

I did miss checkmate twice.

@Chesscoachnet this is indeed an interesting line but we are talking about the exchange french and the Rubinstein French (we haven't talked about this one yet because everybody is busy yelling at me because they think that the french is bad/they think that the exchange french is not boring most of the time/etc...)

Pulpofeira

Real Madrid is boring.

Here is one of my favorite games I played in the french. I was black. It just happens to be in the exchange variation.

I have always been a french player. and 8/10 times I get the exchange french which is so annoying because it is boring. And I literally never get the Classical or the Tarrasch which I studied well as well! Also, when I face the french, I choose a line other than the exchange and the advance, which are very common at my level, I usually choose the Tarrasch or Nf6, and in both cases, I get the Rubinstein!!! It is also annoying because since I studied the french from black point of view, I only have recommendation to play the classical against Nf6, so I do not know the Rubinstein which is also annoying. What should I do? And why are people so obsessed by trading pawns? I understand that they like to release the pressure but also why? And why trade pawns? Why not push?

You've got to be kidding!

I WELCOME the Exchange Variation.  That's half a point in the bag for Black already!  White gets NOTHING!  Thank you for giving me full equality IMMEDIATELY!

When on the White side, it depends what I'm playing.  If I am playing Correspondence Chess, I answer 3.Nc3.  If I am playing over the board, I usually answer 3.e5 with an occasional 3.Nc3.

3.Nd2 and 3.exd5 are NOT EVEN A REMOTE CONSIDERATION when I'm White!

And you'll have to play pure positional play

This is necessary in any opening.  You cannot pigeon-hole yourself to just tactics.

To be any good at chess, you must understand ALL of the following:

1) Tactics

2) Positional Play

3) Strategy

4) Endings

And NO, numbers 2 and 3 are NOT the same thing!

Yeah thank you, but what I meant by this is that it is kinda dull, I mean the french all in al is dynamic, but the exchange french is different

Celta de Vigo.

chamo2074

Yeah they play exciting football, but their results aren't that good, I enjoyed a couple of their wins against Barcelona, seemingly our rivals have a curse against your team. Anyways let's stay on topic

fenrissaga

Hi, i know the advance french is praised by several c3 sicilian players (Svesnikov Karpatchev,Pap Misa ,Alisa Melekhina) they have great results with this they transpose i suppose with a sicilian like position

chamo2074

Yeah but we are talking about the exchange and the rubinstein? Why are they so common at my level?

fenrissaga

Yes, about the exchange i suppose you allready partly answer the question, they want to release the tension and at my level i want an open game and piece play ,have no idea about the Rubinstein

tacticbot1

The exchange french is one of the most boring chess openings.

Yes this is why I am asking about why is it so common?

@fenrissaga this is the Rubindtein:

I play usually the Tarrasch or the classical against the french but people keep taking this pawn!!

Also, yes release the tension, but why? And why not the advance variation? I understand that you'd like an open game ok that's one answer, but why release the tension?

fenrissaga

As an international Patzer i can answer : because its less complicate you release the tension you open the game and then as one famous streamer says RRRRWAR .

You throw your pieces at your opponent king ,it's a beginner common idea.

Thanks for the diagram

chamo2074

Welcome, and thank you! Is the famous streamer called GM Ben Finegold?

fenrissaga
