Why don't people chat?

I think it is weird and annoying to analyze in game if you did not explicitly agreed to before doing so.

I lucked into a really nice combination in a recent game and must admit to being a touch hurt when my opponent just resigned without a word.

On the other hand in a recently concluded match people noticed that a number of games were producing a 1:1 individual score and the match had become very close.  There was a certain amount of activity on the match chat board with participants rooting for their player in the few remaining undecided games.  That was nice and we were all keen on a re-match as soon as the match concluded.

After an otb match most people talk through the game with each other.  It just feels like the obvious thing to do.  But I suppose you invest a good bit more into otb play.  Still I think I'll start proferring a comment or two, perhaps just before resigning, when I lose a game.  Maybe it will turn out fun to discuss completed games here.

i suppose part of the problem is, chat is personal to the individual. and text can be very emotive and carry a completely different meaning to your intention.

you can be humourous, but it can be taken as an insult. you can be offering advice, but it can be taken as condescending/patronising. you can say nothing, in fear of being taken the wrong way, and it be taken is petulant.

problem is people can't see your face or understand your intention. chat with someone you don't know can be completely misread. so a lot of people get burned and think, "i can't be arsed anymore".

i mean take the forums. what's the average number of pages before a thread gets heated/off track. 3?

you have to be a certain sort of person to survive chat of any kind and keep at it. and some people are simply out to annoy or twist your melon.

so i can see why people remain reserved.

I always disable chat during live games( trying to focus on the game), however I don't mind chat in correspondence where you have plenty of time.

Chatting and good chess do not mix.

Me: Hi, what's up?

Opponent: Nothing, just sucking your mom's t**ties

Maybe you need a wife since you sounds so lonely. Dude this is Chess site, a site of WAR !!! Some people maybe are too serious while playing it which caused they didn't notice your chat message I guess.

Sounds manlier than woman. I appreciate it.

Those that think no one chats?

You should see me and bronsteinpawn's blitz banter.

Havn't done this for a while, but last time we played a bunch of 3 0 there was tons of chatting.

And no BronsteinPawn, this is not a good excuse for you to use for losing 21:2. Laughing

I was chatting a lot too.

BronsteinPawn

My non-sense levels were higher than yours. Now that is AN EXCUSE.

21:2 ??

You're scary, Logozar!

Hitchy04

If u want to chat to someone just send a private chat to them or do a very long game

Hitchy04

No one will want to chat if its a 5 min game (especially if its rated!)

I agree with 11dex-11. Although in a longer game, chats may be more possible. If you would want to chat during a game, you may try to find and remember a group of players who had chat with you during a game and try to find them if they are online to have another great game of chess and conversations. happy.png

The correct answer was, "Oh. I didn't realise my young brother could play chess.

The people who say things like "get a life" don't really get it.  I play exclusively 960 these days, and have done so for years on this site, 10+ games a week, usually 5/3.  A month ago I said something to the effect of "Wow, we have 15 games, kind of a rivalry going on.  Time to buckle down and even things up!"  And sure, not a lot of substance there, but 15 games is 15 games.  And my opponent said nothing.  Which I still find weird.
