Why don't people chat?

On ICC I have chatted with people from all over the world.  I have a good friend in Sweden (I'm Indiana, USA) who I was able to help deal with grief over the loss of his son.  I have great fun with Irish friends (my maternal roots) and have tournament team-mates from Russia, Ukraine, and Japan.  To me, it's an opportunity to enrich the life experience -- but I agree with the right to view chess as a solitary experience or as mortal combat.  Great to have a choice.

I enjoy chatting. But when I play on the phone I can't send messages after the game has finished. Chess.com should fix this

People don't like to chat with strangers. Try to befriend others 1st thru PM.

SuchAreTheJoys

I fully expect people to be polite and reply something when I say "gg" at the end of every game  (which I do regardless of result). Anyone failing to do that I block.

Go ahead. Send me a PM.

Hahahaha

In-game chat is far less intrusive than a PM. Lots of people turn it off for lots of reasons.

I recommend to parents whose children play here to make sure they disable chat. There are creeps here—they are in the minority, but if you play enough you will run into one.

Better yet, play on a tablet. The app makes it harder to see the chat, and also easier to limit chat to only friends (a list that could be kept to people you know in real life).

I would also include the parents monitor their children and advise them to play and chat on chessKids.com especially formulated for them...

I agree kids should not be on internet without their parents beside them. Kids are dumb and honest. They answered stranger's questions without thought. Most. Common question. Are you Home Alone?

KingSideInvasion

Well it feels that it would be rude to chat in the middle of the game from an etiquette point of view... I mean it's like talking to your opponent in an OTB game. Although I totally agree that there are not enough post mortems and people should try to start more conversations after the game.

people do not like pointless banter , they want to dispose  of there opponent with the least amount of pain.....i am sorry does that come across as hurtful to anyone?

I always say "Good luck," or at least I try to remember to say it. And I usually say GG. But in between, I don't like  to chat.

Mr Smolenski is sick.We are players.

bong711

I already said this people don't like chatting with random strangers. Those who like to chat, try adding players to friend list before challenging the other to game with chatting.

Laskersnephew

In OTB chess we don't "chat." In fact, talking to your opponent during the game is strongly discouraged except under a small number of circumstances. But we do shake hands--or we used to!--and we generally say something like, "Good luck." It's just ordinary courtesy
