Why I absolutely HATE playing the King's Gambit Opening!

This is why I personally dislike playing the King's Gambit. It opens the King's side too early, exposing the king to attack. If one were to play this, I think that they should be prepared to castle queenside, quicksmart.

These ARE my personal views. However, I would be happy to be contradicted I welcome all views and comments and hope some debate will happen on my forum. THANK YOU!

Or just play Nf3 instead of taking e5

Hi Seayun--the King's Gambit was the pet of Morphy and friends all the way from the 1700's to the 1950's.  It led to many an explosive knock-out, even in odds games, but a little-known player named Bobby Fischer found a surprisingly effective defense: 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3 d6!  This isn't nearly as brutal for white as the worst-case scenario you've shown of course, but it still relegated the opening to the amateur level ever since.  Versus other openings the KGA just isn't that sound, and it's winding up in the endgame with a missing pawn that hurts as much as what you've demonstrated above.

Gambits are about giving up a pawn for speedy development.  White wants black to waste time playing capturing moves, i.e. capturing on move 3 is contrary to the spirit of the opening.

But more specifically, this is a common pattern for both black and white i.e. the queen checking on the h file then moving across to win the e pawn.  I lost a few games like this as black when I was staring out.  It's not that the king's gambit is bad, it's just the growing pains of someone learning how to play chess.

Time4Tea

White should never take the e5 pawn in the KGD until they've played Nf3 or otherwise secured the Kingside. It's a good way to quickly be down a rook.

Ben_Dubuque

yes even then Taking the pawn on e5 is bad. anyone who knows what they are doing is fine. the exception is the against the move 2. ... f6

and Fischer's Defense is not that effective from what I have come against (I do well against it both OTB and online (multiple places). As a note Fischer wrote that as an emotional teenager after loosing a game to Boris Spassky who used the kings gambit.)

Fischer later essayed the gambit himself proving it is completely sound. Carlsen has played it. Short liked it even though he said that objectively it isn't best. there are many very strong players who like it. I had a competetive position against an International Master in the Modern line. which I have since gotten better at playing against as well as strengthening my tactics.

Playing against the gambit is a good way to learn if you can defend. My problem is I tend to be in one mode and that is attack. even when I am black I try to attack.

Bc5 is the best way to decline the gambit. fxe5 is a mistake. Play Nf3 and continue the game. You should keep in mind that if you play a gambit, your opponent doesn't have to accept it.

Play 2...d5, the Falkbeer Counter Gambit.  It has an astoundingly good score for Black.

Yes but if ex c6 Nc3 works well

3.fxe5 is a miserable move, anybody who plays it deserve what they get!

ThrillerFan

3.Nf3 is lightyears better than 3.fxe5??, but it's still very weak, and I still absolutely refuse to play the White side of such utter cr*p like the King's Gambit.

alec104

If 3.Nf3 then either Be7 is very reliable and solid when I was younger I use to play the Falkbeer and Abazzi defense 3.Nf3 d5 (same idea as Falkbeer) scored some nice wins with it......

if 3.Bc4 John Shaw says in his new book on the Kings Gambit Nc6 refutes it he backs up everything he says in the book.

Xeelfiar

Reti wrote that, especially for beginners, is good to play gambits and open games to improve combinatorial vision. I agree with him.

Yeah why play the king's gambit when the Giuco Piano and Ruy Lopez offer much better chances and don't even give up a pawn?  I wouldn't call the King's Gambit utter crap but it's just not the best as black gets easy equality at best.

I havent read his book nor can I find the analysis online, but I am very interested in finding out what it says about Bc4. Because I might disagree with the analysis especially in OTB play

Ben_Dubuque

Yeah the guy is better objectively, the kg might be more practical

Al-Khalifa93

this opening is really cool in the Bullet games just makes the position looks crazy and complicated which could help you win on time :DD

Why I hate playing the Spanish Game:

yistate

Bc5 is easier to play against than other replies like cunningham, fisher, classical and even perhaps botvinnik.

Ben_Dubuque

One of my best games in the KG was against the Bc5 variation which is called the classical IIRC
