Why it is or better still why is it even entertained as an idea worth playing or even talking about beats me. Maybe it is a tribute to that Steinitz maxim the king can defend itself

Chess.com's "book" seems to be a an extension of the Encyclopedia of Chess Opening (ECO), which includes the King David's opening. Being an encyclopedia, the threshold for inclusion there was low. The Sea Cadet's Mate is an ECO opening, and that one literally ends in checkmate.
