Post other good fried liver games here

Traxler aside. As an exercise write down the best continuation instead of 5. Nxd5

You can't learn to refute it, as there is no refutation. 6. Nxf7 is the best move recommended by the engine. White is better.

I recommend to play b5 or na5 after white plays ed , instead of playing nd5 this move . That is not easy for black to deal with the complex situation that follows .

White doesn't have to play the fried liver. The Lolli is better.

AngryPuffer

yeah but id rather not lose the initative as white

sure you are a pawn up but black has a great time here attacking and putting the pressure on white

Take the e4 pawn instead of moving the knight

A top player won as white with that.

Indeed. I think many people think the Fried Liver starts with 4. Ng5, but that is just a Two Knights Defence Line. The Fried Liver Attack only if Black plays 5. ... Nxd5??, which is generally considered a blunder. 5. ... Na5 is the main line for this line of the Two Knights Defence, and 5. ... b5 is, or at least was when I was studying chess a lot many years ago, a sideline with less theory. Another suggested line for exploration was also 5. ... Nd4
Basically, the Fried Liver Attack is good for White to be aware of just in case Black blunders, but White needs to be prepared for someone with the Black pieces who knows what they are doing. I seem to recall that 5. ... Na5 lines tended to end up favouring Black.

5...Nxd5 is completely acceptable for black and is actually the second best way of facing the entire 4.Ng5 opening. Stronger than the Traxler (4...Bc5), the Ponziani-Steinitz (4...Nxe4?!), the Fritz (5...Nd4) and the Ulvestad (5...b5).

5...Nxd5 just leads to positions where black must defend and white has all the fun, so there's no reason to suggest such a risky line when black gets easy equality (but no more than that) with 5...Na5, but objectively there isn't anything wrong with 5...Nxd5.

Thanks y’all for the detailed answers

Ah, views have changed since my day, but perhaps not surprisingly. I've only gotten back into chess in the last couple of years, and even then only on and off. Most of my knowledge is probably about 25 years out of date, and I guess it shows. I suspect Black will have to know theory down pat to venture this route though, and entering the complications is not for the faint of heart. So it may not be wise for beginning players to go this route as Black, it is very good for them to know as White. Anyway, thanks for that, I'll have to do some digging around to find the current line for Black to check out how things stand when the dust settles.

The Ulvestad is the worst opening ever. Do not take b5. Play Bf1 and Nc3 after Qxd5.
