I have said something like this on a thread comparing the Barnes and the Grob some months ago, but my take is still: 1) Engines say the Grob is awfullest but for the practical player it makes Black play sharply and precisely or else the light-square power of a Bg2 and Pc4 and Qb3 as like as not can produce a great position for White. 2) Aside from getting one's opponent "out of book" I struggle to see what the Barnes accomplishes so even though the engines say it's better than the Grob it's hard to see how this applies in practice - Black can play "general principles" vague moves and still come out better. 3) 1. a4 and 1. h4 are also pretty pointless. 4) "One size fits nobody". If there's one thing Magnus Carlsen has taught Fone us it's that the objective/engine evaluation is in practice often subordinate to the "playability" of the position.
