ADMIN: Where am I compared to my countrymen

Hi Admin, I was trying to see where I sit within my compatriots and came across a few issues to allow any accurate comparison.

1. Some players received a boost and have not played since, this has inflated there already inaccurate rating.

2. Some players have very limited games to allow any accuracy e.g. "Taeyeon_SNSD" has only played two games, one vs. a ~978-rated player and 1 vs. a 1038-rated player. He has a current rating of 1570, with a highest rating stated as 1420.

Is it possible to generate a report, say once a month, showing members were they sit rating-wise within their countries active players (played 5 or more rated games within the last month), with a 90% confidence in accuracy (played 30 or more rated games in total).

Used as a marketing tool, increasing motivation and offering tailored recomendations to your courses that would best suit their individual game, would provide something for the members and should show some upside for Chess.com, a win/win.

You can get a comparison of where you sit versus your compatriots any time you want.

Ratings of "New Zealand" standard chess players on Chess.com  ("New Zealand" is in quotes because there is nothing done to verify the country of players here.)

Yes, ratings are often inaccurate, especially those of less active players. The adjustments were done last fall to try to reduce some of the inaccuracy at the top end. You can read all about the Standard Ratings Boost idea. Whether or not it worked is open for discussion.

Your compatriots are the millions of people around the world who play chess. What difference does it make if they come from your town, your country, or your hemisphere?

I don't see how monthly published ratings lists would provide more of a motivator that looking at the graph of the ratings distribution. You can get one any time you want. How does know that you are on page 5 motivate you?

Thanks notmtwain for your reply.

I know where and how to get the listing above, it inherent inaccuracy especially in the example I gave is the issue.

I am comfortable with the methodology and reasons for the ratings boost, it was never going to be 100% correct and I would not wish to condemn it for not being perfect, again, in the example I gave, a filter for “90% confidence in accuracy (played 30 or more rated games in total).” would eliminate these gross anomalies.

Where I sit within my countrymen / compatriots certainly can be a motivation, if I am sitting at 1,020th within my country I know I only need to improve a small percentage to break into the top 1,000 of all players who identify themselves as a New Zealander.

Maybe for larger counties this will not be as effective, maybe for the US as an example, if this was further broken down by state it may provide similar motivation to some.

N.B. Compatriots are people from the same country i.e. countrymen not everyone else on chess.com
