Bogart the Chess Player

Bogie fan Charlie Kondek said he knew Bogie loved chess, but wondered if he was any good at it. Bogie was actually a world-class chess player. He played
one level below ‘master’ and served as a United States Chess Foundation tournament director. He even achieved a draw against Grandmaster Samuel Reshevsky
in 1955. He played almost every day, between takes when filming, or down at the Hollywood chess club. It was at his suggestion that chess scenes were added to
Casablanca. Bogie and Bacall were featured on the June-July 1945 cover of Chess Review magazine. It is rumored that, as a young man during the Great Depression,
he scrounged up lunch money by hustling chess in New York City parks.

In all the years I've read about Bogart the tournament director---I've never seen a tournament cited. Why dont we ever see something like this---The Southern California open championship (1950)---directed by humphrey  Bogart or the Orange county chess championship ---Bogart tournament director.

I'm beginning to think thats all bogus ---maybe Hollywood PR.

I think he would have drawn too many people to the tournament just to see him and maybe get an autograph or something. Cite a tournament he directed if you can.Laughing

Can you imagine Bogie trying to direct a tournament with a crowd of people around him with pencil and paper wanting an autograph.
