Can anyone figure this out?

What leads you to believe that exactly?  Something he said?

No, in fact, I had sent him a pleasant little greeting after my third (and as it turned out, last) move. Well, you can see where I am from. My greeter is from Syria. Syrians and Iranians have been officially instructed not to play Israelis in competitions. I thought he would abort the game from the beginning, and was pleasantly surprised when he began to play. Apparently, I was a bit too optimistic.

You may be right, I don't know, but it occurs to me based on that statement that you're not blind to the flags next to people's names either when it comes to presuming who they are and what their motivations are.

You seem to already have had your own conclusion about the question you've posed -- what were you looking for out of this thread?  Confirmation?  Corroboration?  Commiseration?

Atos

It seems that we do not have enough information about what actually happened, however... the people who do not wish to play Israelis have the right not to.

rubygabbi

Well, it's true I had a hunch from the start about this and I do think, in this case, my presumption was not unreasonable. But I was not seeking confirmation, corroboration or commisersation; I merely wanted to get different opinions on this, especially from those who might have had similar experiences.

With full control over who you play here people could have any number of reasons, including the one you suspect, for aborting a game like this.  It's unfortunate if that's what actually happened, but people being people it's unavoidable in a community this large.  There are plenty of other opponents fully willing to play a full game so I wouldn't worry about it too much.  You're not going to resolve any deep rooted geopolitical issues over a game of chess anyway, and this thread will be short lived if the attempt is made here.

rubygabbi

I never had any intention of doing so - otherwise, I would have brought my suspicions out in the open from the start. This is already a fairly old thread and I have long gotten over the incident and continued on my way.

I didn't get a greeter game I think.

I'm pretty sure everyone would.

Are you sure you don't mean Nf3?

Indeed he did. In fact he said so on the previous page.

Aha, down at Post #15. I never made it that far!

Thanks, anyway.
