just wondering, are any noted chess players recreational drug users?

Lenny Bongcloud is definitely the most famous, though I'm sure there are millions of others.

And if you take into account that chess is a drug...

haha. its interesting... drug use in cognitive activities is pretty frequent. substances like ritalin, aderol, other things like that are often used by college students to increase concentration, but apparently they dont slow brain function. and then of course, intellectual people just tend to enjoy recreational drugs more than the next, and most chessplayers are intellectual people.

has fide banned stimulants like ritalin, aderol, even cocaine, for this reason?

interestingly, i read marijuana isnt banned, although i swear i play better stoned, just as long as the time control isnt too short lol

I don't know what FIDE has banned or permitted, but when Ivanchuk got away with refusing to give a sample for a doping test, I think the rules about this became practically obsolete at the very top.

Most of such drugs' effects are short term, and almost all have detrimental effects. Most tournaments that the top players attend last more than a week, and usage of such drugs isn't sustainable over that period, and definitely not sustainable as a life style.

There's also the notion of "state dependent learning." It suggests you'd have to be loaded a lot...during study, practice, and play. I'm not sure it relates to chess or not.
