I generally recommend plastic chess sets with quiver for first-time purchases. They are affordable, easy to store, and great for taking places. Chess.com store has one such available, and you can find similar sets across the internet. Just make sure that you get double or triple weighted chess pieces for plastic - it makes a huge difference.
