randomly started thinking about this:

basically pedro damiano was like "man e4 e5 Nf3 f6 is such a trash opening; i can't believe anyone even plays it," and then everyone was like "i know right" and then named it after him

i dont know why this is so funny to me

On a similar note, chess openings are named for many reasons and the ones named after players aren't always the ones who invented the opening, or even the ones who first studied it, but rather who popularized it and eventually got it named after them. One example is the Morphy Defense in the Ruy Lopez (...a6) as Morphy hardly ever played this opening. He played the Berlin Defense [from both sides] more often if I recall correctly).

Chess openings are named for many "categories" and if you want a comprehensive list of the opening category names, then check out this old YouTube video I made on the topic (or if 40 minutes is more than you want to stay for, then just use the chapters on the bottom of the video to find the opening categories you are curious to learn a little about). happy.png
